Chapter 2 posted. I was doing a scene yesterday and realised that it wasn't working, simply because I have had so much fun writing Alec Freeman and Jackson in this story that I had drifted away from the 'Vulcan' aspect of Straker. So it needed re-writing. It is rather difficult doing a Vulcan who is gradually becoming human! Just occasionally he reverts to his 'origins' and stands there, puzzled at the sometimes incomprehensible actions of these primitive people. I hope it comes over okay though! And this is the picture that set the whole story in motion. I don't need to say which episode, do I!

I have spent the last few weeks working on what was going to be a frothy story involving just a few characters. Nothing terribly serious, just a few amusing incidents. I have done some very dark stuff recently, and even no Man is an Island had a very dark undercurrent, Memento Mori was angst-ridden and as for Vodka.. well, that was very strong stuff. Terra Nova was great fun to do, but that was easy, as the story was already there and just needed to be written out.
There are two other completed UFO stories waiting to go online. One for the July challenge; to write Mary Straker in canon, and although I have not done 'exactly' canon, it is true to the facts. The other story (Let's call it... 'The Park' for now) is I think, about 18K, and after it has been checked over by my beta, will be going on the Herald once Vodka is complete. It, too, was meant to be frothy, but things have a way of changing, and it became darker and far more serious than I had initially planned. I won't mention the real title yet, but it was a good story to do on several levels as it gave me the opportunity to explore Alec Freeman in greater depth. The really serious story, Confession - not its real title- has now morphed. It has taken on a life of its own and is extending itself into other aspects. It has confirmed one thing though. I am a writer of serious and gritty angst. Not romance, or adventure. Not comedy or froth. I have struggled with my 'frothy' story. All the time, while I have been trying to make it a light-hearted and cheerful account, there has been, in the back of my mind, the knowledge that I am not enjoying writing it. So. it's back to the drawing board. I will keep most of the story; it works so far, but the 'froth' will fade, and the seriousness will take over. THEN perhaps I will find exactly where I am heading with this story. Sigh. Poor Straker. Don't get me wrong. I like froth, and romance and comedy. After all, I wrote the Vengeance Series in Thunderbirds, and I amuse myself with frivolities such as the Virginia Monologues, (I have to check every time I type that title that I have put the correct spelling!!) but those are candyfloss stories, no substance, no depth. So, its back to Straker. Back to angst. Can't wait. Stories, complete and in progress to date: Vodka .... currently going on the Herald - 18k The Park..Complete. to go on the Herald after Vodka - 18K The July Challenge.. Complete to go on the Herald - 8K Froth.. in progress currently at 8K The Lift.. in progress.. currently at 4K My Friend Straker ... in progress .. currently at 2k Combined Ops.. in progress..currently at 13K The Briefcase... in progress (adult) 2K Matter of Degree... in progress... 15 k (Most of those are alias titles by the way!) DAMN I had better get on with them hadn't I! I have three (no; six) stories on the 'back burner' at the moment. Well, probably more than that if I actually search through the numerous memory sticks that are lying around the house/office/briefcases/desks. I have two Rachel stories nearly completed, but I need to redo several earlier ones before I even think about finishing those. The Rachel stories were going to end in the marriage between Ed and Rachel, but that won't happen now, although it will end happily. ( Hey, I do ANGST... not 'Get'em' stories!!)
And after all, not every relationship has to end in a couple walking down an aisle. Let's face it, marriage would not be permitted between two people in that situation. (I covered that in Rules and Regulations!) Combined Operations (the next Rachel story) will have to be re-thought, as will 'A Matter of Degree' which was going to be the final story in the Chronicles. But, then I remembered 'Pittencriel' .. yet another Rachel/Ed adventure! I sometimes wonder if I will ever finish these stories! It doesn't matter though. There is time enough to write and to finish the UFOverse stories that I want to do. What IS important is to correct the things I have done in those earlier stories that are are so very, very 'wrong' (Alec Freeman as an Australian, Straker as a tee-totaller, Paul Foster as an incompetent!, and Shroeder misspelled throughout!). And maybe there will be time to do those reviews. Shepherd? You want to know how that is coming along? Well, it's ........ progressing. Slower than I would have liked, but I am getting there. Over twelve months now. But I am quietly pleased with it. (And that is down to one person.) |
